Today, June 25th, 2009, is one of those monumental days where decades from now, you will still remember where you were when you “heard the news.” The world lost an incredible talent today, the elusive Michael Jackson, and the news broke first in real time on Twitter. I compulsively refreshed my Twitter feed, waiting to see if the terrible news would be confirmed, and once I heard credible sources beyond @PerezHilton and TMZ reporting that it was indeed true, my heart sunk…

Say what you will about Michael Jackson, although many questions about his moves and motives will go unanswered, it is undeniable that he made a huge footprint on pop music, the music industry, and people around the world.

Celebrities, many of whom were inspired by MJ or felt that he paved the way for all pop-stars to come, are flocking to Twitter to leave their two cents about today’s sad events, and since they say it best, I’m going to sum up with words from some of my favorite public figures:

@TheEllenShow: So sad to hear about Michael Jackson. His music changed our lives. The world has lost an amazing singer and dancer. I will miss him.

@LittleyLittley: We wouldn’t have Justin Timberlake without Michael Jackson

@NickCannon: Rest in peace to the greatest to ever do it. His legacy will live on forever!

@NateCasey: I may just wear one glove to bed tonight. This sucks!!

@NKOTB: RIP Michael Jackson. You will be missed!

@LLCoolJames: I’m devastated by the passing of Michael Jackson; incredibly sad. He was one of my childhood idols. I salute you King of Pop.

@_M_I_A: MICHAEL JACKSON, the first two english words I eva spoke. The future sux!

@JimmyEatWorld: Sad news about MJ. His music will last forever

@ThisIsRobThomas: Michael Jackson? Dead at 50? I am filled with sad.

@MCHammer: I will be mourning my friend, brother, mentor, and inspiration…He gave me and my family hope. I would never have been me without him

@IamDiddy: MJ showed me that you can actually see the beat. He made the music come to life!! He made me believe in magic. I will miss him!

@Kelly_Clarkson: Someone pinch me! RIP Michael. My thoughts and wishes go out to his family. We’ll always love you Michael!

@petewentz: I have never felt this before in my life. I could measure my childhood 2 now on an MJ growth chart. RIP. The last legend.

@JohnCMayer: Dazed in the studio. A major strand of our cultural DNA has left us. RIP MJ.

My prayers are with the Jackson family tonight, especially JANET, who is one of my all time favorite artists. Not to be forgotten is Farrah Fawcett and her family as well. May they both rest in peace.
