Who said Twitter never did anything for me!? Last night, I was having some fun by live twittering comments from the peanut gallery (AKA: me) as I watched The Grammy Awards unfold, when suddenly I got an email from the Editor-in-Chief of BettyConfidential.com asking if I would take my comments a step further and write a roundup of the evenings events for her site. Would I!? But, of course!

Below is the transcript, but to see the article in all of it’s glittery, glossy, glory–check out the full piece complete with video footage over at BettyConfidential.com.

Three years ago, I had the honor of attending the Grammy Awards in the flesh, live at the Staples Center in L.A. (and for the record – yes, Kanye West really does do victory laps around the stadium during the commercial breaks). This year, though, like every year prior to 2006 and every year since, I watched the biggest night in music comfortably parked on my couch, excited to see history in the making, the dreams of newcomers coming true, and old favorites reigning yet again.

In no particular order, some of the most noteworthy moments of the evening:

*Photos courtesy of BettyConfidential.com

HIT: M.I.A’s Belly
Could M.I.A. be more preggers?! The 51st Annual Grammy Awards occurred on her actual due date. Like a pro, she walked the red carpet in a very decked out muu-muu, proclaiming that she was to take the night just one step at a time and that she still couldn’t promise that she’d be able to get up and perform (on-site emergency transportation awaited). Ultimately, she did make it to the stage with an almost water-breaking performance. So, do we think the mini M.I.A-to-be will be a performer? I’d say so. Who else can say they took the stage a day (maybe another week at most?) before he or she arrived in the world!? Needless to say, this was a BIG year for the “Paper Planes” princess …

HIT: Carrie Underwood’s Legs The results are in, America has cast its votes, and it’s a unanimous decision, Carrie Underwood’s legs are amazing! Yes, her pipes (as in vocals) are amazing too, but sheesh, those legs! (The Twitteratti comment that perhaps Tony Romo should reconsider his current choice of female country singer of the year…)

*Photos courtesy of BettyConfidential.com

MISS: Jonas Brothers + Stevie Wonder Combo
Clearly an attempt to help the generation who knows Stevie as one of the greats relate to (and maybe even grow on) these three brotherly heartthrobs, it backfired horribly, according to the Peanut Gallery. I happened to refresh Twitter on my Blackberry as the quad performed to nothing but a flurry of hate for the performance. Apparently, fans would prefer to keep their classics and their boy bands separate…

QUASI-MISS: Coldplay + Random Jay-Z Cameo
I heart Jay-Z. I’ve seen him live at Madison Square Garden more than once and referred to him as my future hubby (pre-Beyonce), but his random pop-up during Chris Martin’s piano solo caught me off-guard. I liked his tidbit, don’t get me wrong, but as someone known for excellence, I thought he could have taken the mashup a step further a la Linkin Park. I wanted to see him do a little bit more and I don’t like to see it when he just barely misses the mark. Coldplay, on the other hand, did a solid job and were very much the men of the evening, winning three awards, including Rock Album of the Year.

HIT: Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift
Say what you will about the talent during this set (cough -miley’s vocals–cough), but I give kudos to these two young ladies for setting a good example and teaching little girls everywhere that teen pop princesses can get along. What a miracle–two girls in the spotlight who don’t hate each other, taking a step toward turning the girl-on-girl-hate prevalent in the Disney culture down a notch (without culminating in a kissing scene, circa Britney, Christina and Madonna back in their day).

*Photos courtesy of BettyConfidential.com

HIT: Katy Perry’s Fruit
Fully clad in fruit salad, the bi-curious songstress took the stage in a sea of fellow produce, bringing home the award for the only female performer of the night to wear ballet flats (green sparkly ones at that), the sign of a truly confident woman. Wackiness aside, Katy Perry always looks and sings great–and brings the fun!

QUASI HIT: Radiohead Marches On
Radiohead, who created a fuss last year with their ‘pay whatever you want for our album’ amazing publicity campaign, nailed the Grammys with a brilliant performance complete with marching band. Despite a few wisecracks that it looked like Thom Yorke was pulled out from a gutter right before his performance, they mixed it up and delivered a ‘real’ performance in the truest sense.

HIT: The Very Brave Jennifer Hudson
An American Idol turned Oscar winner and now Grammy winner lived a fairy-tale life over the past few years, which was all interrupted by a tragic, real-life nightmare and the loss of her mother, brother, and nephew. Last night, looking more radiant and fabulous than ever, she re-emerged with her head held high, accepted her award on behalf of her family members both in heaven and on earth, and delivered an extremely emotional live performance that ended in tears. Girl’s got game.

MISS: Rihanna and Chris Brown
A hot couple collectively and hit performers of the year individually, something felt lacking without Chris & Ri-Ri at the show last night. Reports had circulated that Chris was “allegedly” in a physical altercation with an “off-the-record” female the evening prior. Official reps at the Grammys confirmed that both artists had cancelled their scheduled performances of the evening, as well as their attendance on the red carpet. We were hoping that the rumors weren’t true for two of the biggest chart toppers of 2008, but it looks like Chris was indeed booked last night on domestic abuse charges.

Other Highlights of the Evening:

–Paul McCartney + David Grohl, two masters of two very different eras with “I saw her standing there.”
–Al Green + Justin Timberlake + Keith Urban onstage!
–Kanye + T.I. + Lil Wayne +Jay-Z + M.I.A collaboration!
–Adele, newcomer, ripping it up!
–Paul McCartney, still being a part of the Grammys.
–Estelle & Kanye: American Boy
–JustinTimberlake + T.I.: Dead & Gone
–Blink 182, including Travis Barker fully intact except for the arm sling.

All in all, this year’s show was a great one, complete with some major social media progression on Grammys’ side: They introduced their own Facebook page and group, launched an active YouTube Channel featuring clips from the evening and a live Twitter account, and they created playlists of this year’s nominees at Last.FM. While fans everywhere appreciated the move toward connecting viewers with the show, next year we’d like to see the Grammys make even bigger moves toward real-time content, videos, and back and forth with the public!

In the PR industry, your ability to compose a compelling and results-oriented pitch is what will make or break you. That’s why co-founders Kevin Dugan and Richard Laermer created The Bad Pitch Blog, a blog dedicated to highlighting the worst pitches out there, in the hopes of calling out those who give us PR folk a bad name and better educating all of us on how to pitch properly.

Last night, I attended their 3 Year Anniversary Party @ Under The Volcano in New York. I had the pleasure of meeting both founders, as well as running into some of my favorite PR tweeps including @Andrew_Graham, @TiffanyPR, @MCaldecutt, and PRNewser Editor @JoeCiarallo.

Editors are encouraged to send in the worst pitches they’ve ever seen from the receiving end, and publicists can continue to read on, in the hopes that nothing they ever pitch will show up front row center .

Happy Anniversary BPB!

On Saturday afternoon, as part of another E100 monthly adventure organized by the fantastic Rob Gonzalez, we trekked up to Sugar Hill, Harlem for some parlor jazz with the infamous Marjorie Eliot. Not only were we privy to an intimate private performance by Ms. Eliot, but we were privy to this performance IN her apartment.

Every Sunday, for the past 17 years, Marjorie has been opening up her home to Jazz fans, free of charge. You literally pull up a folding chair, and just start listening in as she tickles the ivory and features other jazz greats.

This weekend, she played alongside drummer Al Drears for this special Saturday concert Rob had arranged for us. As the performance came to a close, the room was dark with the glow of blue lighting; it was post 5PM and the sun had gone down in Manhattan. Majorie thanked us all for our attendance and let us know that these performances are meant to honor her son, Philip Eliot, who shared in her passion for music, and tragically passed away in 1992. In that moment, in her home, you could feel how much history had taken place in that very room.

Words cannot explain the warm-natured souls of both she and Al Drears (who was bad ass on the drums, by the way). She is thanking us? We are in her home, we should be thanking her!

Proving it is a small world, I said a quick hello & thank you to her after the show, and reminded her that I actually helped to publicize one of her shows at Symphony Space in the Upper West Side back on Valentine’s Day, 2006. She remembered the connection and was so excited that I was able to witness this legendary jam session that I had once written about, with my own eyes. It was honor.

A true gem of New York – her concerts are open to all, every Sunday at 4PM, rain or shine. Just go to 555 Edgecombe Avenue (@ 160th Street) and ring up to 3F.

Tonight, we were at a taping of “The City,” a spin-off series of the wildly popularized LA-based “The Hills,” which is actually a spin-off of the original version of the show “Laguna Beach,” all from the MTV family.

The event was held in honor of two renowned and talented artists, Mike Sagato and Ryder E. Robison, who were exhibiting their latest collections to date with special guests: Claudia Schiffer, Chase Crawford,Taylor Swift, Jay Lyon, Adam Senn, Whitney Port, Olivia Palermo, Jeremy Piven, Danny Masterton, Leighton Meister, Royston Langdon, Bar Rafaelli, Erin Williams, Hilary Rowland, and Caroline Trentini.

In “The City,” Whitney Port, who plays Lauren Conrad’s co-worker turned friend in “The Hills,” ventures away from the Hollywood Hills and in to the land of New York City in pursuit of her Fashion & Styling career.

Seeing her in person, tonight, affirmed my assumptions that she is A) beautiful (that skin!) and B) a seemingly nice and down-to-earth chica. As we hung at 169 Bowery in the Collective Hardware space, it was bizarre to see many of the other characters who are promo’d in the clip for the new series enveloping this event like any other.

“Surrounded by all new friends, pursuing a fresh love life and starting to work in the upper echelon of the fashion industry is a lot to navigate for a new girl in the big city… especially one who has everything to lose,” the press release on the show reads. “In a city full of people with their own agendas, Whitney will have to quickly decide who she can trust and who to stay away from.”

In a statement, Port said: “I am thrilled and honored to be in New York City, not only working for one of the most renowned fashion designers, Diane Von Furstenberg, but to be able to mature as a young woman both professionally and personally.”

Can’t wait to see this episode air! We all signed release forms, so you never know… Jackie, The Obama Girl, Tia Walker or I might make a cameo…

Last night, we started out the evening at my apartment, where the Las Vegan duo – Afghan Raiders – had stashed their stuff for the day, pre-CMJ gig @ 205 Club (formerly known as 6’s & 8’s) in the Lower East Side.

*OJ & Beans at my place

Over some pre-drinks, we were pondering how we all knew each other and I was astonished by the inter-connectedness between us. The Afghan Raiders came highly recommended to me by my good friend OJ. OJ had met Mikey, 1 part of the 2-man duo, through his girlfriend Helen when she lived with her college friend from RICE, Ryann, who grew up with Mikey’s (now) wife, Emily. I knew Ryann because she moved into my old room @ 4th & B (via craigslist) when I moved out. Ryann then introduced me to Helen, and then via me through Dion, Helen met OJ, her now boyfriend, as OJ & Dion go way back further than anyone else. Did anyone else follow that!? Because I didn’t.

*Mikey & Beans performing live at 205 Club

None-the-less, their music is sick. If I had to pick a genre I guess I would define it as futuristic electronica that fuses garage, house & a hint of hip-hop in a really different way, although it is much more textured and vibrant than just that. I see this music being picked up for soundtrack on film, as it gives you a certain feeling that something is going down. Some tracks feel subtly creepy, well others just make you want to dance. And last night, with Beans’ headbanging debauchery (which was so out of control that the table that was hoisting up their macbook machinery almost crashed off the stage), it was hard not to want to move with the music.

*Dion & I checking out the band

These guys are an iPod must have for when you need a boost – check it out!

Last night I attended the Tablet 10 Book Launch at the very-trendy Bowery Hotel with Jenny & Sarah. A little out of the loop on the objective of this event, a party-goer informed me that “Tablet” is like “the Expedia of upscale boutique hotels around the world.”

The evening’s book launch was celebrating the Top 10 New (and subsequently Best) Hotels in “The Americas”. Whether or not these are in any particular order, I’m not sure, but I’d be happy to win a 3 night stay (which they were raffling off, still waiting for the phone to ring…) at even just the NYC Location of Choice (the Lucky #7 pick and host of the evening’s soiree) for a luxurious quasi-escape from New York reality.

For all my travelers, here is the list:

La Purificadora (Puebla, Mexico)

Winvian (Litchfield Hills, CT, USA)

Fasano (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

The Huntley Hotel (Santa Monica, CA, USA)

Remota (Puerto Natales, Chile)

Amanyara (Providenciales, Turks and Caicos)

The Bowery Hotel (New York, NY USA)

La Suite (Rio de Janerio, Brazil)

Chambers (Minneapolis, MN, USA)**

Awasi (San Pedro de Atacama, Chile)

**Speaking of Minneapolis: did you know it ranked as 3rd (out of 10) for “Best City for Singles”, beating out NYC as 8th!? Minneapolis has been popping up everywhere lately, apparently its the new “black”.

The rest of the evening was thoroughly enjoyable, especially the passed hors d’oeuvres, which involved your traditional fare, but more importantly the ultra-mini-melt-in-your-mouth chocolate-chip-&-creme-cookie-dessert-sandwiches that followed behind them. The networking was good, too, I met “John,” an entrepreneur, who is soon to launch a city-guide of sorts that will “cater to a more chic crowd” (much like this one) of which he tells me I’m not allowed to mention on my blog just yet…

The night closed out with a stellar Gift Bag (which was perfectly branded to fit this event, with not too much and not too little, I might add), including:

Beautiful coffee table book (which they were releasing) of these Top 10 hotel destinations

$50 gift card to John Varvatos

CD by Sagatiba “The Spirit of Brasil” with “cool suggestions of jazz, undulating rhythms, sensual urban grooves, and dozens of genres in the mix. Enjoy your taste: www.sagatiba.com”

Sagatiba “the Spirit of Brasil” martini shaker (Sagatiba was on Open Bar for the night; quite tasty)

A boxed up present wrapped in “Huntley” ribbons (reflecting the branding of the Santa Monica Huntley Hotel which made the list) with their match box and aromatheraputic candle (smelling of hotel soap) enclosed.

Leather HSBC luggage tag with enclosed address slip

AND best of all: White Terry Cloth SLIPPERS with a B engraved, which I will assume stands for The Bowery Hotel.

…of which I immediately put on my feet upon entry into my apartment and exit out of my new black 3-inch pumps, and because they were just so deliciously comfy, I actually wore them to bed! A perfect end to a pleasant evening.
