The Power of Positive Thinking: Realized!

OK – I’m having a break-through and I’m going to get meta-physical on you for a moment… take it or leave it ;) .

So, when I got a call this week from one of my longest & dearest clients, Elline Surianello of LeMetric, I have to admit, I was not enthused by her request that I come by her shop on Sunday morning @ 10AM, meaning an 8:30AM wake-up on my one “free day” of the week. That said, I always LOVE my experiences at LeMetric and walk away with realizations that pay for the pain of waking up early or working overtime, tenfold.

With my new perspective on life that no opportunity should float by untaken, this morning at LeMetric was no exception–it did not disappoint. What I lacked in sleep, I gained in FREE therapy.

To backup: LeMetric deals specifically with women who are suffering from hair thinning or hair loss. While it sounds like a very targeted demographic, you’d be surprised. Hair loss can be caused by: post-pregnancy, auto-immune disorders like Lupus or Diabetes, eating disorders or malnutrition, severe trauma or stress (such as death or divorce), medications (like birth control), hormonal changes, menopause (it has been studied that 50% of women will experience some form of hair thinning by the time they reach menopause), or a genetic predisposition. As you can imagine, this encompasses a large number of women: 46 million American women to be exact.

More to the point, I met this morning with a psychological PhD (Valerie), who will be joining forces with Elline to help women “get out of their own way” and deal with the emotional and mental issues that come along with an aesthetic, or physical condition, such as hair loss. Val’s outlook on life is one that I am certain, if it was practiced by all, would not only make our individual lives much better, but the world a better place as a whole.

Val’s story: Val lived in Manhattan from her 20s into her late 30s. While she had been in several long-term relationships, as she neared her late 30s she began to fixate on the fact that she had yet to get married or have children. She actually hated the city; she was more of a suburb, green backyard, kind of girl. But she would not allow herself to move to the ‘burbs before she met Mr. Right. She was certain that her chances of getting married & having kids would be impossible if she moved out to suburban New Jersey. Finally, at 39, she decided, “You know what? Forget Mr. Right, it’s ok if I don’t get married, I’m ok with adopting on my own, I’m going to give up on obsessing on these issues, and I’m just going to start pursuing what’s going to make me feel good, in the now.” At age 39, she moved to New Jersey to her dream home in May. Between May and September, she dated a slew of eligible bachelors. By September, she had met her husband-to-be, and by February, she was married. Today, she has her beautiful adopted daughter from China, and everything she spent her 30s looking for. She got all of the components, after officially letting go of the negativity of not having them.

The Moral of The Story:
Without getting all “The Secret” on you guys, the “law of attraction” really does have some merit, in my humble opinion. If you fixate on what you’re stressed out about, it manifests itself. If you believe in what you truly want for your life, it manifests itself.

As Val spoke, I related her notions to developments that have occurred in my own life (or my friends and families lives), and in any circumstance I could picture, it rang true, for the positive, or for the negative.

The Take Away: Most people assume that if they can fix the pre-existing “conditions” around themselves (ie: career, cars, rent, money, relationships) than they will feel better as a person, but the solution is just the opposite: If you feel better about yourself as a person and you focus on attracting the positive, any negative conditions that surround you will gradually re-condition themselves to align with your positive outlook. Sounds so easy, right?

Val’s final message to me this morning was that ultimately, we do have control. In her example, fixating on getting married, don’t just say “I want to get married,” consider WHY you want certain things to happen, and how it will gratify you and the people around you if it does. If you focus on the WHY verses the HOW, you bring the good things in.

Well, end of long-winded story, sometimes when you’re asked to get up at 8:30AM on a Sunday morning, its worth indulging, because you truly never know what’s around your next corner. The transformations of these women that I am lucky enough to see in Elline’s salon on a daily basis are truly, earth shattering!!
